Directions: In ML Critical Paper 1, you were asked to "generate three alternative image ideas for the cover along with three alternative headlines..." In this assignment, you will actually implement this question through photoshop image manipulation.
You will only need to generate ONE alternative cover image/headline.
IMPORTANT: Steps one and two SHOULD BE DONE IN THE PRECEDING WEEK or you may be late.
First, scan the cover of the magazine you analyzed in ML Critical Paper 1 or download it from the web. Save your "original" image (what you scanned/downloaded) and submit it along with the assignment.
Second, search for the substitute image you want to include in the new cover (it has to be related to the same story). You can scan the new image from inside the magazine or another publication or "borrow" it from the web (first, search flickr.com, then google and yahoo images and other places; make sure you cite/reference appropriately). You may also use your digital camera to take a photo of the image yourself, if you have the skills and equipment.
Third, clean up the original image by erasing the original photo and headline.
Fourth, copy/paste the substitute image and resize/clean it to fit in your new cover. You may need several attempts here to create a clean image. You may also paste several images, not only one. Make sure each image is pasted into a new "layer."
Fifth, insert your new headline and subheads and any other text.
Sixth, upload both of your photos to flickr (MAKE SURE YOU PROPERLY REFERENCE THE ORIGINAL IMAGE AND THE IMAGES YOU USED IN THE NEW COVER).
Finally, feel free to experiment and add filters, play with exposure, brightness...
Your generated images should have a headline and a subhead and the logo of the magazine (make sure it looks as close as possible to the magazine cover template). You can add other images from other stories on your cover, but you need to have the original story represented too (So, the cover could have more than one story highlighted). Your final image size should be 800x600 pixels (for both the original and the new cover).
Remember, you will be graded on the cleanliness and the aesthetic quality of your work. Remember to put each image in a separate "layer" and to merge (flatten: Layers >> Flatten Layers) all the layers at the end before you convert the image to a JPG or GIFF or PNG or other format optimal for emailing/web posting (YOU NEED TO FIGURE THAT OUT!).
TO SUBMIT: You may email me your photo or save it to the server folder created for the class and assignment. Make sure you clearly write your name somewhere (e.g. jadmelki_photoshop_original.png and jadmelki_photoshop_edited.png). ALSO, email me the your Flickr link.
