- Download two images from the web (you can use flickr.com, google images, yahoo images or other AS LONG AS YOU CITE THE PHOTO PROPERLY):
- Find the photo, then:
- Right click >> Save Image As...
- Make sure to save it somewhere accessible.
- Note: To test if you can save the photo correctly, before you save it: right click >> View Image.
- Open both photos in Photoshop Elements (File >> Open).
- ERASER/OPTIONS: Choose the "Eraser" tool and erase parts of the image
- Change the "Size" of the Eraser tool from the Options Menu, and experiment...
- Change the "Mode"... experiment.
- Change the Opacity to 50%, 20%, 5%... experiment.
- Note: you can change the options to any tool you use.
- UNDO: To Undo one of more actions using the "Undo History":
- Note: If the "Undo History" palette is not open: Windows >> Undo History
- To undo the last action, click on the one before it.
- To undo the last 2 actions (or 3 or 4...), click on the one before the last.
- LAYERS/TRANSFORM: Copy a part of the second image and paste it into the first:
- Use the "Rectangular Marquee" tool to select a region in the 2nd image, then: Edit >> Copy
- Paste what you copied into the first image (Edit >> Paste)
- Notice that you now have a second Layer in the "Layers Palette" (bottom right; If the Layer palette is not there: Windows >> Layer)
- Click on the "eye" next to each layer to make a layer invisible
- Create a new Layer using the tools in the Layers Palette (you can also delete and duplicate layers).
- Change the "Opacity" of a layer (20%, 50%, 80%).
- Change the size of the layer by: Image >> Transform >> Free Transform (This only applies to the selected layer).
- Grab one of the layers and move it up or down.
- TEXT/MOVE: Use the Type Tool to write something on the image
- Choose the "Horizontal Type Tool" from the Toolbar, click inside the image and start writing.
- Play around with the options menu for Type (change color, size, Style, Text Wrapping...); TRY THEM ALL!!
- How about inserting your reference/citation for this image now?
- Use the "Move" tool to move the text to wherever you want (this can be used with any layer)
- ZOOM: Use the Zoom Tool to zoom in or out of the image
- To change from "Zoom in" to "Zoom out" change the options in the options menu (from + to -).
- Or simply select a percentage from the options.
- CROP: Crop your image using the Marquee tool and the Menu Bar
- Select the area you want to keep using the Marquee tool, then
- Image >> Crop
- SIZE: Change the size of the image using the Menu Bar:
- Image >> Resize >> Image Size
- Make sure "Resample Image" and "Constrain Proportions" are checked
- Change either the width or length under "Pixel Dimensions" (NOT Document Size)
- Note: if "Constrain Proportions" was not checked, the image proportion with be distorted (TRY IT!!).
- Note: Changing "Document Size" is for printing the image.
- CANVAS SIZE:
Change the Canvas Size
- Image >> Canvas Size >>
- Add one or two inches to the Height
- Click on the middle bottom square in the box of squares below the Canvas dimensions (this will have the additional canvas only added to the top) >> OK.
- Try it again by changing the Width and playing around with the square boxes.
- BUCKET: Use the paint Buck to fill the color of the additional canvas you created.
- Select the tool and an area to fill
- Select the Paint Bucket Tool
- Choose a color by clicking on the upper color box at the bottom of the tool bar.
- Make sure you select the correct layer (the layer of the original image).
- Click inside the area you want to fill
- Now, use the Marquee tool to draw a region you want to fill with another color
- Select the Paint Bucket tool again and click inside the marquee box.
- Now, switch the two square color boxes at the bottom of the Tool Bar (by clicking on the arrow right above them and see what happens (after you use the Bucket tool)
- click inside the bottom square color box and change the color, and experiment...
- Play around with the options of the Paint Bucket tool.
- GRADIENT: Add a gradient effect to the solid color you created with the Paint Bucket tool
- First, use the marquee to select the area you want to apply the gradient (select the solid color you created with the bucket).
- Draw a line with the Gradient tool, starting from the extreme left of the area you selected, to the extreme right.
- Change the colors in both square boxes at the bottom of the tool box, and apply the gradient again (the same way).
- Apply the gradient by drawing the line in a different way (up to bottom, diagonally, only one inch inside the image... experiment!
- Play around with the options for the Gradient tool.
- FLATTEN: View your image in a browser.
- Before you export the image, you will need to remove the layers:
- "Merge" layers using the Menu Bar: Layer >> Flatten Image
- Save as >> (select the appropriate format based on today's lecture; JPEG, GIF, PNG...) >> save somewhere accessible
- Go to your browser >> Open File >> select your image >> OK.
